April Greiman’s Things “Made in Space”

For more than 30 years, April Greiman’s poster Does It Make Sense? has been a staple of graphic design history, thematizing subjectivity and expressing, as one scholar recalls, a “break with the norms of good practice” (Robertson, 2013, p. 123). Alternately hailed, as another observer puts it, “as a radical advance in the art of poster design and condemned as pornographic, self-indulgent and inappropriate” (Whiteson, 1988), Greiman’s poster is both manual and manifesto.
